Main Benefits of Sport Literacy
Prevents chronic diseases
Teaching and learning sport literacy helps prevent chronic
diseases promoting physical health and providing a variety of ways that
physical activity can be competed, whether that’s by yourself, with a couple of
friends or a team of players. Risks of diseases such as cardiovascular disease,
type 2 diabetes, infectious diseases and some cancers can be reduced by doing
the minimum of 150 minutes a week of moderate physical activity, and can be
further prevented by doing regular physical activity (CDC, 2024).
Many different psychological benefits
The psychological benefits of physical health and literacy
extend far, with systematic evaluations indicating that physical activity is
helping provide better outcomes for different mental illnesses and diseases, as
well as helping improve “numerous psychological effects, such as self esteem,
cognitive function, mood, depression and quality of life” (Mahindru et al.,
2023). Not only this but studies even suggest that physical activity help with
deal with and lower stress, improve sleep, attention, focus, memory and many
other functions associated to the brain.
Positive motor skills
Physical literacy provides many different avenues to
complete, compete and have fun in different sports, activities and hobbies, so
while sport literacy has the ability to give you options on different physical
activities you can do, it also gives you the motivation, ways to become
motivated and the knowledge that physical activity is actually really healthy
and can help you live a long and prosperous life. As the Australian sports
commission explains, “Physical literacy involves holistic lifelong learning
through movement and physical activity. It delivers physical, psychological,
social and cognitive health and wellbeing benefits.” (AIS, 2019)
Improved chances of healthy habits
As physical literacy provides you with all of the mental
equipment and knowledge to complete different activities, ways to extend and
make those activities harder but also easier, that knowledge creates the space
to do small, healthy activities that can make all the difference and can build
to bigger activities, sports or physical activity. Not only this but the
knowledge of the benefits of that physical activity provides motivation and
drive to do the right thing for your body and mind, helping get into and stay
in a physical activity groove.
Improves confidence and competence in sport
Learning and having the knowledge of different sports allows
you to not only have the basic skills to start out in that sport but also how
to improve in that sport and where to find extra information to improve on your
skills. By experiencing and learning those new sports in the first place, you
will be able to have the confidence in firstly having the basic skills to participate
in that sport but also going through the learning of a new sport again.
